What is Piano Readr?

Piano Readr is a free tool that generates fresh piano sight-reading exercises on demand. Pick a difficulty level, key, and time signature, and it creates a unique two-hand exercise you can play and print.

Is it free? Do I need an account?

Yes, it's free, and no account is required. Just open the site and start generating exercises.

How do I generate an exercise?

Choose a level, then click Generate. Click Generate again at any time for a brand-new exercise. You can also set a key signature, time signature, and notation options before generating.

What do the difficulty levels mean?

Levels run from 1 to 8+, following a graded difficulty system similar to the one used across the piano community. Lower levels use simple keys, stepwise melodies, and basic rhythms; higher levels add more keys, faster notes, wider hand patterns, and more complex accompaniments.

What is a seed?

Every exercise is built from a seed — a number that uniquely identifies it. The same seed always produces the exact same exercise, so you can share a seed with a teacher or friend and they'll see the identical page. Leave the seed field blank for a random exercise each time.

Can I choose the key and time signature?

Yes. Each level offers a set of keys and time signatures appropriate to that difficulty, and you can pick a specific one or leave it random. There's also a Custom level that lets you choose your own combination of right- and left-hand patterns.

How does the play/metronome feature work?

Click Play and you'll hear a one-bar count-in at the exercise's tempo, then a playhead moves through the score in time so you can see where you should be. Use Pause and Stop to control playback, and click anywhere on the score to jump to that beat.

Can I slow down the tempo?

Yes. The metronome starts at the tempo marked in the exercise, but you can type any tempo into the Tempo (BPM) box to slow down or speed up — useful when you're first learning a passage.

How do I print an exercise?

Generate an exercise, then click Print (or press Ctrl+P / ⌘P). The controls are hidden automatically so only the clean score prints.

Does it work on phones and tablets?

Yes. The score scales to fit your screen. A larger screen makes longer exercises easier to read, but the tool works on mobile devices too.

Can I use these exercises with my students?

Yes — you're welcome to generate and print exercises for personal practice and private teaching. Please don't redistribute, sell, or republish them. See the Terms of Use for details.
